December - March '09 Ice Skating Rinks Open For The Season

Christopher Morley Park, Grant Park, Cantiague Park

Glide into the holiday season (and beyond!) starting Friday, December 5th through mid-March at Nassau County’s Christopher Morley Park and Grant Park outdoor ice skating rinks and at Cantiague Park’s indoor rink. All facilities offer skating lessons and equipment rentals to get everyone, no matter what skill level, onto the ice. And with spectacular country settings and other recreational amenities at each location, it makes sense to try them all!

Christopher Morley Park  - Located just north of exit 36 on the LIE in Roslyn Heights, the rink offers three two-hour day sessions seven days a week beginning at 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 4 p.m., and one two-hour session evenings on Friday and Saturday beginning at 8:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6:45 p.m. In addition to the rink, the park includes a large, modern playground; a nine-hole golf course; basketball, handball and tennis courts; baseball fields; and heavily wooded nature trails. For information, call 516-571-8123.

Grant Park - Nestled in a residential area by Broadway and Sheridan Avenue in Hewlett, the rink offers three two-hour day sessions, seven days a week beginning at 10 a.m., 12:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and one two-hour session Friday evenings at 8:30 p.m. Beginning January 1, 2009, the rink will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. In addition to the ice skating rink, there is also a spacious, modern playground; basketball, tennis and handball courts; baseball fields; and fishing in the park lake. For information, call 516-571-7821.

If you prefer the convenience of an indoor skating venue, Nassau County has exactly what you want:

Cantiague Park  - located in Hicksville, just off the Northern State Parkway and east of the Wantagh State Parkway on West John Street is an indoor gem that has been called “Best of Long Island” by News 12. For the month of December, the rink is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. On Fridays during December the rink is open 1 p.m. – 3 p.m., from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., and from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., when pop music and theme-based costumes worn by many skaters make for a truly memorable evening (through the end of the year). Call 516-571-7056 for more information, as the schedule changes monthly.

Outside, there is a nine-hole golf course and driving range, as well as tennis, handball and basketball courts and a large playground.

It makes no difference if you are the type of skater who does more sliding than gliding, you’ll find the ice is smooth and the atmosphere delightfully festive, so “lace ‘em up” and enjoy Nassau County’s spectacular facilities all winter.

June 15 - June 21, 2009 2009 US Open Championship

Bethpage State Park (Black Course), Farmingdale, NY

In 2002, the Black Course at Bethpage State Park became the first municipally-owned golf course to host a U.S. Open. At the time, the 7,214-yard, par-70 layout, originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast and later given a major facelift from Rees Jones, was the longest in Open history. The parkland-style course more than proved itself as a major-championship venue, with only champion Tiger Woods finishing the 72-hole competition under par at 277 (three under). Some minor alterations have been for the 2009 U.S. Open, but the course should essentially feature the same challenging characteristics that the world’s best golfers faced seven years ago.
